Thanks to funding received from several grant-giving bodies, we are
delighted to offer family-based short break carers access to this
free one-day course on supporting children and young people with
autism designed specifically for short break carers and delivered
by Sue Derham.
About the Course
The course offers a practical insight into supporting young
people with autism on short breaks.
- Communication: Candidates will recognise the communication
difficulties a young person with autism can have and will have
discussed the need for individualised strategies.
- Structure: Candidates will appreciate the importance of daily
routines including bedtime and mealtimes, and will understand the
need for structure when planning.
- Sensory: Candidates will be aware of the different ways young
people with autism can respond to people and things around them,
including sensory and sexual issues.
- Behaviour: Candidates will know that there is always a reason
for behaviour that challenges us and will be able to discuss
strategies for addressing the underlying causes
