Practical Issues Supporting Young People with Autism on Short Breaks

Thanks to funding received from several grant-giving bodies, we are delighted to offer family-based short break carers access to this free one-day course on supporting children and young people with autism designed specifically for short break carers and delivered by Sue Derham.

About the Course

The course offers a practical insight into supporting young people with autism on short breaks.

  1. Communication: Candidates will recognise the communication difficulties a young person with autism can have and will have discussed the need for individualised strategies.
  2. Structure: Candidates will appreciate the importance of daily routines including bedtime and mealtimes, and will understand the need for structure when planning.
  3. Sensory: Candidates will be aware of the different ways young people with autism can respond to people and things around them, including sensory and sexual issues.
  4. Behaviour: Candidates will know that there is always a reason for behaviour that challenges us and will be able to discuss strategies for addressing the underlying causes
