Safeguarding Disabled Children on Short Breaks

This training aims to give delegates a greater knowledge of the increased vulnerability of disabled children and to equip them to detect risk and offer greater protection to disabled children on short breaks.
The training will be a mixture of presentation, group discussions, use of case studies and discussion / questions throughout the day.

Content
• Information regarding incidences of abuse amongst disabled children
• Discussions of dilemmas and challenges involved
• Consideration of barriers to good practice
• Discussion of cases - rights and wrongs
• Consideration of the professional and parental perspectives
• Discussion of people’s roles and responsibilities
• Ideas for moving forward and resources available

Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:
• have an increased understanding of the risks to disabled children
• recognise how child protection processes can fail disabled children
• have an increased knowledge of the signs and indicators of abuse, especially in disabled children
• have a clear guidance on what good practice in safeguarding disabled children looks like
• understand the roles and responsibilities of people involved in short break provision in responding to suspected abuse.

Who should attend?

Social workers, team managers, children’s suppot workers, short break carers and anyone else who is involved in short breaks for disabled children. CWDC Standards for Short Break Carers - this course will cover material relevant to Standard 5 “Keeping Disabled Children Safe”.

Trainer
Facilitator Paul Taylor has been working in social care for 24 years, predominantly with disabled children and direct service provision. He has been managing services for the last 17 years and is a qualified social worker and counsellor. A member of the national working group on child protection and disabled children and co-author of one of the chapters of the group’s report “It doesn’t happen to disabled children - child protection and disabled children”. Paul is the Chair of a local disabled children and child protection practice forum, a member of an LSCB sub group and provides training on behalf of the LSCB.
