Direct Payments DoH publication (free copies available from Shared Care Network) 'A Parents Guide to Direct Payments'...
A new publication from the Council for Disabled Children and the Department of Health. Direct Payments are a way of arranging services for disabled children and their families. A person with parental responsibility for a disabled child is given money to pay for services instead of the local authority arranging them on their behalf. The guide has been written for people with parental responsibility for disabled children who are considering using direct payments to buy part or all of the services required by their child (including short breaks). Written by Jeanne Carlin, a parent and freelance social worker, the guide sets out to answer the question 'Are direct payments for you?'
It does this by first considering eligibility and then the practicalities of using direct payments to buy services. It takes you step by step through the process of buying care services directly, including how to find, interview and contract a suitable carer or personal assistant. This useful guide highlights the pitfalls and offers practical advice to make the process less daunting. Copies are available free of charge from Department of Health publications, quote ref. 31213/A available on request in Braille, on audio cassette tape, on disk, in large print and in other languages. Tel: 08701 555 455 Minicom: 08700 102 870 (8am-6pm Mon-Fri) Available to download here: A Parents Guide to Direct Payments
